Believing that thoughtful design can change the way people live, Jonathan Parks begins every new project with a conversation and a pencil. His goal is to design truly memorable, timeless buildings, with importance placed not only on the tangible, such as volume and shape, but also on immaterial elements of transparency, light, and space. Since his design studio’s inception over twenty years ago, SOLSTICE and its predecessor firm have developed a reputation for clarity of concept and quality of work receiving over one hundred national and regional awards in the advancement of architecture, design and restoration.
Jonathan is directly responsible for all design issues and client relationships. He offers specialized knowledge in residential, institutional, hospitality, and commercial design and permitting; Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) permitting; Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulations; coastal construction design projects; planning feasibility studies; project management; and contract documents. He provides expertise in architecture, planning, historic preservation, and interior design. Jonathan has completed construction projects throughout the southeast, northeast, and Great Lakes regions.
Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable design, a number of the firm’s LEED Platinum homes have been rated among the most energy-efficient in the nation and his projects account for 25% of all LEED Platinum buildings in the Sarasota area. Jonathan is also a member of Energy Technical Advisory Committee for the Florida Building Commission and is the Chair of Sarasota’s Public Art Committee. He has been named Best Sarasota Architect by the readers of SRQ Magazine and has received design award recognition from AIA Florida and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Jonathan spent the first ten years of his career practicing architecture at Centerbrook Architects and Planners where he worked with Charles Moore, FAIA, considered one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. During Jonathan’s tenure, the firm was bestowed with the AIA Firm of the Year Award conferred by the national American Institute of Architects, the highest honor a firm can receive.
Jonathan is originally from Amherst, New York and did his graduate studies in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. In his spare time, he enjoys watching Formula 1, appreciates the craftsmanship of vintage motorcycles, and has an incredibly large collection of books on design that his wife would like him to consolidate.
