Another year around the sun and we’re so grateful to have had another wonderful year at SOLSTICE Planning and Architecture. Here are some highlights from 2022.

It was an honor to have our projects recognized with numerous design awards throughout the year.
In May, one of our projects and clients was awarded with the Gregory A. and Eleana Najmy Hall Historic Structure Preservation Award from the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation, The Golden Host Resort and Bahi Hut (pictured above). These awards recognize and celebrate the best historic preservation projects in Sarasota. We helped renovate this mid-century modern hotel and Florida’s oldest tiki hut at 4674 North Tamiami Trail. Mai tai, anyone?
In July, the American Institute of Architects Florida Chapter recognized the St. Armands Parking Garage (above) which we designed for the City of Sarasota with a Citation Award of Excellence in Sustainability. Watch jury comments here.
And then in November, we were honored to receive a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects' Tampa Bay Chapter for MainView Sarasota - an unbuilt hotel project designed for upper Main Street (east of US 301 in Sarasota).
This award was followed up in December with a PLATINUM recognition (the highest honor) for MainView from SRQ Magazine's 4Walls Design Competition in the Future Buildings Category.
Finally, SRQ Magazine's 4Walls also gave us a Gold Award for our proposed renovations and expansion to Temple Beth Israel - in the Future Projects category. Learn more about the Temple or donate to the cause.

A Simple 'Plane'
In September, Jonathan and Kathryn went to visit Centerbrook Architects and Planners, Jonathan's "work-alma mater" for Bill Grover's celebration of life. Bill was a Partner at Centerbrook and a mentor to many - including Jonathan. One of Jonathan's favorite Bill stories was that Bill was tired of walking back and forth between buildings in the rain and so he said to Jonathan, "Design a simple plane connecting these two buildings." Jonathan took his instructions to heart and designed a replica of a paper airplane! You can see it's still there keeping rain off everyone's heads.
A Year in Photos
One of our go-to photographers, Dylan Jon Wade Cox, preps for a shoot of our Pennsylvania project, Cider Hill.
And then here's our client's Pennsylvania project, Cider Hill! Renovations and additions to a property originally built in the 1700s.
A sketch a la Jonathan of a custom home in the Southgate neighborhood of Sarasota now under construction with our clients, Modus Builders.
In January, Julia celebrated her official U.S. Citizenship! USA, USA!
The Rosemary Night Market at our Rosemary Square project. See more photos of Rosemary Square.
In April, a walk-through of one of our residential projects under construction on Siesta Key.
A new mural was painted at Rosemary Square in July. On the day of his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Sarasota native and Negro League legend Buck O’Neil was honored with a larger-than-life mural and Key to the City. Learn more.

We worked with a Realtor to develop a speculative look at what could be built on this property in the Rosemary District and this is what the team came up with! Yes, it looks lifelike but this is actually a rendering inserted into a picture of downtown Sarasota. If anyone is interested in building it, give us a call ;)
In November, our intern Alan, who is a student at USF, presented a portion of his thesis: "Rethinking architecture's contemporary approach to places of worship."
In November, our photographer Dylan Jon Wade Cox took new photos of the famous Paul Rudolph Umbrella House on Lido Shores. In the summer of 2021, we assisted the owners with an emergency repair/renovation of the rear façade. Learn more about it here.
Also in November, Jonathan served as Architect/Tour Guide for Sarasota Mod Weekend. A tour of the Hiss Studio on Lido Shores pictured above.
